CASE STUDY
Avaya Metadata Strategy

Overview

Avaya’s products and services content was produced by many departments across the organization, with little consistency in metadata tagging. As part of a larger effort to enable a sensible content management system, I spearheaded an effort to create metadata standards for the entire company.

The new system will allow Avaya to write once and publish anywhere, dynamically serving content from one central repository to customers, business partners, and employees.

Activities

  • Created a comprehensive list of metadata based on current publishing practices.
  • Developed detailed schematics for employee, business partner and customer sites to identify further metadata needs.
  • Created an ontology of relationships between significant objects.
  • Worked with technologists to define a data model and database structure to implement the strategy.

Benefits

  • Enables the dynamic publishing of multiple websites, which currently rely on manual edits to static HTML pages.
  • Combined with a concurrent publishing process effort, allows Avaya to write content once and publish it anywhere.
  • Improves information-finding and knowledge-management tasks by employees and business partners.
  • By showing the possibilities of the data strategy in schematic form, our clients at Avaya can easily demonstrate the benefits of the system to others.
